If that sentence doesn't catapult you into a clarifying moment, nothing will.

​In my last email, I shared that the Why doesn’t often come with flashing lights or perfect timing. Sometimes, it shows up in a quiet hotel room when you least expect it.

It was our 24th wedding anniversary, and Eric (my hubby) and I decided to take a small staycation, just a short drive from our home in California. We were getting ready for dinner when he suddenly got really serious. He said,

“Babe, I need to talk to you about something.”

Now if you know us, you know we’re not the “dramatic argument” kind of couple. We're always talking about what's going on in our lives, so serious-serious conversations? They’re rare. My mind was racing…

Something about the kids?

A serious health issue?

Did I do something wrong?

I even joked later that if he said something wild like he was leaving me, he would’ve had another thing coming! And it wouldn't have resulted in his bags being packed ;)

But what he said next was a moment I’ll never forget.

“I can’t do this anymore.”

It was the job. He was at the end of this 20-year career rope. My husband had been managing a successful team at a major HMO, but being post-Covid 19, with new leadership and a recent department shakeup, the stress had become unbearable. His new boss - who seemed to be on a covert mission to target him and other directors of color - was draining him. I could see it not just in his energy, but in his body. Random pain in his arm. Irritability. An invisible weight on his shoulders.

Actually relieved, I didn’t hesitate. “Honey, you can quit TOMORROW! We’ll figure it out.”

The look on his face and the exhale, was unforgettable. Our dinner that night was especially light and easy. He didn’t quit the next day, but we put a date on the calendar. He started mapping out the best way to retire early and I got serious about adding consulting to my revenue streams. And in that moment, the shift began. Eric's arm pain began to ease, his spirit felt lighter and we started dreaming about a life of freedom.

That was a moment of clarity. One of many that put us audaciously on the path toward our freedom.

There is usually tension between uncertainty and clarity.

Clarity means you are pulled out of the shadows. The path is lit up before you (like the yellow brick road) and you finally feel ready to step forward.
