I've never wanted to live in a gated community or condo

Have you ever watched the TV show Weeds? The intro theme song was all about the "Little Boxes" that were made of ticky-tacky and all looked the same. It's referring to the homes in a suburban community as well as the people that live in them. This song & visual runs through my mind whenever I see a high-rise or big development of homes.

Being the rebellious, creative, Berkeley-born woman that I am, I want most things to be "out-of-the-box". So when we found that the number of condos far outweigh how many single-family homes there are, we were worried. UNTIL we lived in some for over a month. It was lovely!

We were prepared to weigh the pros & cons of the size and location of the places we viewed but weren't quite ready for the condo vs house debate. we viewed a dozen places to live before making our choice and surprise (to us lol), we chose a beautiful condo.

Our reasons for saying yes to the condo were specific to us moving to a new country:

• Safety - Panama (especially where we live) is an incredibly safe country but living abroad comes with so many unknowns, you can alleviate a lot of stress just by having this basic need fulfilled (especially for my husband). The guards are serious about who comes & goes and everyone looks out for each other.
• Built-In Community - Everyone knows your name lol! Our groundskeeper messaged us when he saw our car had a flat tire. The staff went to look for a neighbor when they didn't see her come back from a nighttime beach walk. We meet and talk to our neighbors -both Panamanians & expats- at the pool, in the gym and see them at the supermarket. It makes a big difference!
• Amenities - Onsite we have a gym, pool, sauna, social area, loungers and maintenance crew.
• The views! Our home in Oakland has a beautiful view. Here, only the condos have sweeping ocean & jungle views. I've come to use beautiful views as a reminder of how expansive the world and our possibilities are.

Wild Wild West Realty

Did I mention that the process was giving wild west? Lol, whew. The easiest way to find a place to rent in Panama is with a realtor. They get commissions for selling a house and on rentals. It was pretty cutthroat but we were given the advice to go with multiple people and give our business to whoever showed us what we wanted.

You might see the same condo listed for 3 different prices. Why? Because realty is different here. They don't all list on one MLS-like site and people don't price by comps. We looked at one building that had the same size condos renting from $1300 to $2200! Each owner charges whatever they want and the realtor may put their commission on top of that. Thankfully, we had some great folks show us around and our landlord is a funny, elder Panamanian that has been phenomenal.

Panama, beaches and moving to another place aren't the only options for freedom
